A lightning strike is one way to get to know your neighbors, I guess.  She had been widowed for quite some time, lived alone, and never got to know her new neighbors as younger families moved onto the block. Then, one night, lightning struck. It started a fire on her roof, burning into the attic. The fire department was quick to respond, but she was left with a gaping hole in her roof and smoke and water damage. The neighbors gathered around to comfort her and learned that she had no insurance and no place to stay. They discussed starting an online funding page, but Jim had a small roofing and construction company and a better idea. Rather than reaching out to strangers for donations, he had the materials and the know-how. They had plenty of working hands right there. They could do this. Another neighbor’s son had just left for college and his room was available. Working together, they restored her home and gave us an extra reason to smile and feel good this morning.
