Weekends

The radio career of Mike Roberts, a native of San Antonio by way of Marion, Texas began at San Antonio College. He enrolled in the Radio-TV-Film classes there in the mid-seventies and later graduated from the program with an Associate’s Degree. While attending classes at SAC, he held down an air shift on KSYM and served as the station’s Public Service Director. As his skill level improved Mike was admitted to the internship with KTSA and became a regular performer on the ‘SAC Show’ where he gained much experience while working with experienced pros in a commercial broadcast environment.

While still attending SAC, Mike obtained his first commercial broadcast job at KBOP-AM/FM, Pleasanton, Texas in 1976, as afternoon/evening jock and commercial producer. The PD that hired him there, Travis Hall, later became Mayor of Pleasanton. He also ran the board for local sports broadcasts with KSAT-TV sports anchor Greg Simmons as the play-by-play announcer.

Mike’s next stop was KONO-AM in 1977. After briefly serving as the overnight jock, he quickly moved up the roster to become the youngest afternoon drive personality in the city at the time and the station’s Music Director. He was the first KONO jock to play an ‘oldie’ when the station switched from Top-40 to what would later be referred to as the Gold Format.

He then ‘moved across the hall’ to sister station 92.9 KITY-FM for Top-40 afternoon drive duties, later moving to middays and again performing as Music Director.

After a brief one year stint at KESI-FM (106 FM), Mike’s career flourished while working at 93-Z, KAMZ-FM, El Paso beginning in 1982. Hired for middays, he later moved to afternoon drive and set ratings records while gaining national notoriety as the number 17 rated air talent in the nation 12+. He also voiced and produced station promos during his 3 years there.

Then it was back to San Antonio for what would become a long and successful landing at Hot AC KSMG-FM, MAGIC 105. After a year of building the evening shift up to double digit ratings he was promoted to afternoon drive where again he found ratings success. Several years later he moved to middays and again found ratings success by knocking off long dominant KTFM in the mid-nineties. Setting ratings records that still stand. During his time at MAGIC, the station changed from Hot AC to Oldies and back to Hot AC again. He also appeared in numerous TV commercials for the station supporting major station promotions.

KQXT-FM, AC KQ102 was Mike’s next stop. Brought in to handle afternoon drive and later moved to middays during his 3 plus years with the station. While there he was also the station voice for AM 1200 WOAI.

It was during this time Mike started building his home studio and got more serious about being a freelance voice talent. His voice has been part of 3 Addy Award winning projects and has been heard across the nation, in Canada, Europe, South America, a juke box, a few Jumbotrons, and on a cruise ship.

Mike returned to MAGIC 105.3 in 2002. There he did a little of everything. On air seven to midnight and weekends, production, vacation fill-in for other shifts, and remotes.

Until February ‘21 Mike produced audio and handled some of the programming duties for the No Bull Radio Network, a group of AM and FM stations which cover 35 counties in South Texas with classic country music. Mike Roberts was inducted into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been a member since 2010.

Mike has been playing radio for quite a while here in San Antonio. Enjoying the music you love and enjoying playing it for you. Along the way, he had the chance to meet many of the performers played on KONO. When not on the air he enjoys eating at little ‘hole in the wall’ Mexican restaurants, taking scenic rides, and perfecting the grilling technique.
