An Airborne Sergeant’s Journey Through the Battles of Vietnam

The Steadfast Gaze of Sgt. Steve Funk, 101st Airborne Division Serving in the 101st Airborne Division, especially in a leadership position like a squad leader, would have required courage, resilience, and tactical acumen, given the intensity of the combat operations during that time. The division’s actions significantly contributed to the overall efforts of the United States military in the Vietnam War.

Today, we honor Sergeant Steve Funk, a valiant member of C/2/506th of the 101st Airborne Division. Drafted on July 2, 1969, Sgt. Funk exemplified courage and leadership as a squad leader during a tumultuous time engaging in fierce combat in Vietnam. One of the most notable engagements involving the 101st during that time was the battle for Hill 937, also known as “Hamburger Hill,” His dedication to his country and his unwavering spirit in the face of adversity stand as a testament to the bravery of all who have served.
