HINESVILLE, Ga. — More details are emerging in Wednesday’s shooting at Georgia Army base, Fort Stewart.

Who is Sgt. Quornelius Radford?

Update 7:02 a.m. ET Aug. 6: The alleged gunman was identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, The Associated Press reported.

He is from Jacksonville, Florida, The New York Times reported.

Officials said Radford used his own handgun, not a military weapon, to shoot soldiers where he also worked. No motive was given. He enlisted into the Army in January 2018 and was a supply sergeant. Radford had not deployed.

Other soldiers tackled Radford to stop the shooting, CNN reported.

“Soldiers in the area that witnessed the shooting immediately and without hesitation tackled the soldier, subdued him. That allowed law enforcement to then take him into custody,” Brig. Gen. John Lubas said. Lubas is the commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division.

He had been accused of driving under the influence and running a red light in the early morning hours of May 18 and had a hearing scheduled in Hinesville, Georgia, on Aug. 20.

Radford’s father told The New York Times he hadn’t seen any unusual behavior by his son and does not know why he opened fire.

The Times reported that Radford had texted his aunt before the shooting, telling her that soon he would be in a better place, according to Radford’s father, who had not seen the message for himself.

He did say his son had complained about racism at Fort Stewart and had been trying to get transferred from the base.

All five soldiers who were wounded were listed in stable condition and are expected to recover from their wounds. Three had to undergo surgery, the AP reported.

The Army is investigating and the FBI was on scene to assist, the AP reported.

The brigade is considered by the Army as the “most modern land fighting force, The Associated Press reported.
