Dancing with Shadows the unique works of Gilberto Tarin
Centro Cultural Aztlan is proud to showcase the unique works of Gilberto Tarin in the exhibit Dancing with Shadows. This exhibit showcases paintings and mixed media works portraying Tarin’s reactions to the Vietnam War. His darkly surrealistic, expressionist works portray torturous inner conflicts and emotional struggles. Centro Cultural Aztlan invites the public to the opening reception Friday, August 12th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The exhibit continues in Galería Expresión through September 9th, 2016. Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Construction Alert
Starting the week of June 6th the main and service entrances at the cemetery will be closed for 90 – 120 days due to construction. To access the only entrance to the cemetery, visitors need to take Winans Road to Nursery Road and then turn into the cemetery at San Antonio Blvd. The cemetery will be moving building #1 and resurfacing San Antonio Blvd. And, building #2 will be remodeled to have public restrooms and an information center. Shelter #1 will be closed during the construction. The Gravesite Locator Kiosk currently located at the front entrance will be unavailable until construction is complete. Those with computer access can log on to: gravelocator.cem.va.gov or use a smartphone to locate specific gravesite locations. The mobile online app is available at:m.va.gov/gravelocator. To locate a Veteran’s burial site, click on the underlined Cemetery link, select Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, and then type in the Veteran’s name. Public restrooms at the front of the cemetery will be located in the small mobile building next to the warehouse behind the old administration building near Shelter #5. San Antonio Herb Society September Meeting
San Antonio Herb Society September Meeting Thursday, September 8th at 6:30 pm. Our speaker will be Shari Anderson. Shari is a clinical herbalist and owner of Omni Star Farms in Boerne. She has been involved in the cultivation, study of, and teaching of herbal healing since 1979. Shari's formal Botanical studies include studies with the American Herbalist Guild, course work with the Rock Mountain Center for Botanical Studies, the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, and Dr. Christopher's school of Natural Healing. She will be speaking on the Herbal Remedies for Pain and Stress and will bring a selection of special preparations to sell; her presentation will provide an amazing wealth of remedies that plants and herbs can offer. The meeting will be held at the San Antonio Garden Center, 3310 N. New Braunfels from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Admission is free and the public is welcome. San Antonio Walk for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease)
Join us on Saturday, September 10, 7:30 am at OP Schnabel Park, Graff Pavilion for the Greater San Antonio Community Walk for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) to raise awareness and funds for research and education in PKD and organ donation.. Enjoy our live DJ, great food, door prizes for registered attendees, and a penny dash for children. Playground is available for children. Visits from mascots will be present to cheer on walkers/runners (1 mile and 3 mile routes). This event is an excellent opportunity for networking and education for patients and family members. 32nd Annual Kolache Festival
The 32nd Annual Kolache Festival is scheduled on the square in downtown Caldwell, Texas on Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 9am to 5:00pm. Admission is free. The day-long Kolache Festival features continuous entertainment on one main stage, featuring several bands including The Shiner Hobo Band and the Praha Brothers. Immunization Records No Longer Available at Metro Health Downtown Location
Immunizations records will no longer be sold at the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District downtown building located at 332 W. Commerce as of today. The immunizations clinic, located inside the Frank Garrett Community Center at 1226 NW 18th Street, will be the sole location to obtain an immunization record. In order to obtain an immunization record from Metro Health, solicitants must meet ALL the following requirements: Immunization must have occurred in the state of Texas, Immunization records must have been provided to San Antonio Metro Health District through City of San Antonio clinics or City-affiliated health providers, Provide proof of identification with an official form of ID, Parents will need to show proof of relationship (i.e.: birth certificate), and Pay $5 immunization record fee. 4th Annual Central Texas Strollathon
The Strollathon program, Rettsyndrome.org signature fundrais-ing event will take place Saturday Oct 8th at OP Schnabel Park 9606 Bandera Road This event has been bringing families together to fundraise and to strengthen the local Rett community since 2004. These events are planned and executed by dedicated volunteers and committees in each community with support from Rettsydnrome.org staff. These events have raised over $10 million in the last 12 years. Anyone can participate in the Strollathon, including people of all ages and fitness levels. Nothing But Nets PSA Campaign: Help Save Lives From Malaria
Now in its tenth year, Nothing But Nets is the world's largest, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a disease which claims the life of a child every two minutes. Inspired by sports columnist Rick Reilly, hundreds of thousands of people have joined the campaign that was created by the United Nations Foundation in 2006. Nothing But Nets has raised $60 million to help deliver nearly ten million bed nets to families in need, along with other crucial malaria interventions. Office of the City Clerk Provides Passport Services
With Summer drawing to a close, now is the perfect time to prepare for your future travel! The Office of the City Clerk invites U.S. citizens to apply for their passport with minimal wait time and no appointment necessary. Citizens can apply for a passport and have their passport photo taken at the Municipal Archives & Records Facility located at 719 S. Santa Rosa. The Municipal Archives & Records Facility is ADA-accessible and offers free parking. As an added benefit, the facility is located next to the Vital Records Office should individuals require a certified copy of their Long Form Birth Certificate. The U.S. Department of State requires a completed DS-11 Application, proof of U.S. Citizenship (such as U.S. Birth Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship), valid identification and one passport photo. The U.S. Department of State also requires a check or money order for their fees. SApets.com just celebrated 10 years of helping the lost, found, pound, and adoptable pets of San Antonio. If your pet is lost then come to www.SApets.com and view the home page which lists current pets at the San Antonio ACS. Also while at SApets.com upload a photo and description of your lost pet and then click over to the Found page to see if someone has already found your pet. SApets.com also lists adoptable pets from several San Antonio pet rescue organizations. A new feature to SApets.com is the listing of the ACS pets that are at the Brooks kennel including maps of how to get to that kennel. Donations to SApets.com are welcome in order to help with the fees such as the annual ACS fee. SApets.com is a software database project designed and maintained by Jay Pennington which just celebrated 11 years of helping San Antonio's lost pets get back home resulting in fewer pets being put down in the shelters.
