We have all been there. Your neighbor just got a shiny new car, and it’s gleaming in the driveway. Your friend bought the latest electronic gadget that practically makes the coffee for him every morning. Your cousin calls you to tell you that she received a beautiful new handbag with all the designer labels.
You feel like a loser and the green-eyed envy monster has got you bad. No one likes this feeling but what can you do to control it?
The important thing is not to panic.
Don’t think about where you are in your life or where you wish you were. That kind of thinking doesn’t solve anything. Believe me, I know. I always remind myself that I don’t know the whole story. You never know how someone purchased these things. The average American family has thousands upon thousands of dollars in credit card debt. The truth is that a lot of people would rather charge their purchases now than wait to buy with cash.
Sometimes the people we think that have the flashiest lives are the ones drowning in the most debt. You never know for sure, but it does happen for sure.
Another good tactic to avoid those envy blues is the simple act of gratitude. Who cares if your friend has more stuff? Do you have your health, food to eat, a roof over your head, and loved ones?
Congratulations! You are doing better than like 80% of the world’s population. One should never forget that. I know this is hard to do especially when it seems like everyone else is doing better than you. This is a skill that needs to be sharpened with time. Tell yourself you have everything you need. Remind yourself that you are doing just fine. It may be hard to believe but I promise it will get easier.
Its important to remember that envy is a normal human emotion. There’s nothing wrong with having it as long as you don’t let it get out of control.
Making sure you follow these simple steps will make sure that you keep the green-eyed monster in check. Don’t forget to go out and appreciate a walk through nature as well. It will do wonders for your health and help you calm down that evil envy monster.
We all could certainly use a little help with that once in a while.
